Week 8: October 16

These boys have created their own amusement ride on the swings!

Rose Park Families,

An area of focus for this school year is reflecting on and perhaps improving our process for communicating behavior expectations to students throughout our school community. Our desire is to always come alongside parents, teachers, and students to help our children grow into people of God. One of the central components of this initiative focuses on working to recognize and acknowledge positive student behavior. We have a team of teachers from across grade levels creating a school-wide system for teaching and addressing behavior in our students.

At this point, we would love to have your input about the overall "climate" of our school community. The survey should take 5-10 minutes to complete. Please share freely as responses are confidential.

Thank you for your input as we work to build and reinforce positive social skills and behaviors in students.

It’s a joy to partner with you,

Miska Rynsburger

2 - Proficient (on track) - They are growing in the skill and their learning is on track for 4th grade.
1 - Progressing (growth needed) - They are consistently struggling to preform the skill on their own and this skill is an area of growth.

Wednesday, Oct. 28:  Picture Retakes

On Wednesday, Ms. Joy from the Outdoor Discovery Center came and visited our school. She brought along a small toad and asked the students to create a small habitat for this creature. The students ran over to the woods and searched for bugs, leaves, and sticks to place in its habitat.

On Wednesday, the students were asked to write letters to our School board members. The Board of Trustees members were meeting at RP this week. Each student crafted beautiful cards and wrote encouraging notes. Through the whole experience, these students were SHINNING God's love.

Week 7: Oct. 9

We did it!  We finally finished our personal narrative, and WOW are they great!  You're in for a treat when these make their way home around conference time!

We celebrated our writing success by sharing our stories with the other 4th grade class.  It was a treat to receive encouraging notes from our friends about our writing.

Way to go 4th graders!

MASKS - Thanks for your attention to keeping the masks clean and fresh each day!

REPORT CARDS - I'll be busy this week getting your child's report card ready - expect to see it come home on Friday.  Please look through it and celebrate it with your child.  I'll be ready to entertain any questions you have at our conferences the following week.

GRANDPARENTS - All grandparents received a letter from us this week.  Thanks for your help in supplying all the addresses we needed to make this possible!

CONFERENCES - Please remember to sign up for a time to meet with me via zoom for our first of two parent/teacher conferences this year.  They will be taking place on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19 & 20.  You should have received an email on Monday (Sept. 28) from Holland Christian instructing you on the sign up process.

MATH INTERVENTIONS - We are excited this year to welcome Miss Mandi Hulst as our Math Interventionist.  She will be using our Delta Math Screener to identify students who need a little additional help on some targeted skills.  These skills are identified as essential for your child to master their foundational math skills as they move throughout the grades. We have determined that if they are lacking mastery in these specific foundational skills it can impact their achievement in middle and high school courses as well as on their ACT/SAT.
If your child falls into this category at some point during the school year, they will be pulled out of math for 10-15 minutes up to 2 times per week to work on a specific skill. As soon as they master the targeted skill, they will be moved out of the group.
If you have further questions regarding this math intervention, please feel free to contact me.

Green Walk-a-thon T-Shirts - I would recommend hanging on to those shirts that came home a few weeks ago, at least for the duration of this school year.  Sometimes an event comes up later in the year where we decide to wear them again, so don't wear them for painting projects or send them off to Ditto quite yet.😁

Daily Math Minutes - Keep plugging away at those daily math minutes!  Remember, our goal is to increase speed (fluency).  So if your child's scores are not going up, investigate how they are practicing each day.  Is their practice method pushing them to be faster?  Thanks for your help with this!  Mastery of the facts is essential to a student's future success in math.  Math facts and mad minutes are due back at school every Monday, and a new set is issued again on Mondays.

Blue sky and sunshine calls for lunch outside! Enjoyed three days of sunshine with our sandwiches.

Week 6: Oct. 2

Details about our upcoming week:

Grandparent's Day 2.0 - This year, we will not be having our normal Grandparent's Day celebration. So our class is reaching out to our grandparents and special friends. On Thursday, there was a note in the planner asking for Grandparent's addresses. We will be writing letters to our grandparents and special friends next week (Oct. 8).

Please record those addresses in your child's planner. More than one address is perfectly fine!

4th Grade Orchestra - On Monday, Kyle Nester came and talked to our students about 4th grade orchestra. A note came home on Friday (Oct. 2) AND Tuesday (Oct. 6). Please read through that letter and email Kyle Nester (knester@hollandchristian.org) if you have any questions.

Parent/Teacher Conferences - You should be receiving an email next week from Holland Christian inviting you to sign up for parent/teacher conferences. I am very much looking forward to chatting with you and celebrating these awesome students of mine! These conferences will be held virtually via zoom on October 19 and 20 in the late afternoon/evening. Many of you are familiar with the sign up process. If you are new to Holland Christian, please follow the instructions to get signed up for a slot. If you have trouble or questions, don't hesitate to ask! One recommendation I have - if you have multiple children at HC, you may want to schedule an empty slot between your conferences. If teachers run behind, it will be tricky to navigate that on zoom - I don't want you thinking I forgot about you (and vice versa) just because the conference before you went over. If you schedule your own children every other time slot, that allows a little bit of grace in case one your children runs over, you won't be late to the next. Thank you!

Report Cards - On Friday, Oct. 16, your child will come home with a report card.

Help Wanted - Holland Christian Schools is seeking people who want to build up and encourage young people and families through providing regular school bus transportation for students. Hours are flexible. We are seeking applicants who demonstrate a love for kids, careful, conscientious driving habits, and an interest in providing a needed service to the families of Holland Christian. No previous school bus driving experience necessary. Holland Christian will provide the training necessary. If interested please contact Dan Vos at 616-820-2805 or dvos@hollandchristian.org.
