World Down Syndrome Day/Rock Your Socks at Rose Park!

World Down Syndrome Day is a global awareness initiative backed by the United Nations since 2012.  It is held every year on March 21 to raise awareness of Down Syndrome.  The date 3/21 is chosen because being born with Down Syndrome is the result of having a third copy of the 21st chromosome. As 3/21 is a Saturday this year, we will celebrate on Friday, March 20. All Rose Parkers are encouraged to celebrate.

Local author and Down syndrome advocate Katelyn S. Herrygers will be joining us on Friday, March 20 for a book reading and activity in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day. If you'd like a copy of the book I Am Me for your home collection, use the discount code WDSDRP20 to save $3.21! Why $3.21? The discount represents Trisomy 21, the third copy of the 21st chromosome which establishes Down syndrome. Buy the book locally through Poppin Huis in-store or online to apply the discount. Shop Here (https://poppinhuis.com/collections/super-jay-brand/products/i-am-me) Bonus, $3.21 of each book sold using our Rose Park coupon code will be donated to the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan! (Discount code valid through 11:59pm March 21, 2020)

Do you want to know more about the author? Check out her website KatelynShae.net (https://katelynshae.net/)

Friday, Feb. 21
MARKET DAY - The big week is here!  The kids are EXCITED! (and a little nervous too😉) Please use the checklist that comes home on Monday to be sure you have everything set and ready to go for Wednesday.  Then, please plan to stop by and see how things are going.  We will be open from 12:45-2:30 on Wednesday, Feb. 26.  In order to assure that we have enough products for the entire student body, we are asking adults to refrain from making purchases until after 2:00.  If you are available to stay afterwards, we would welcome the help cleaning up in the gym and tallying our earnings and tithing in the classroom all before we dismiss at 3:10. Thank you!

FUN FRIDAY (the 28th) - Silly Socks and Hat Day

BOX TOPS - Parent Board is collecting Box Tops one last time this year. We appreciate this opportunity to collect a little extra money to support our various functions. We will be collecting your box tops and counting next week Thursday Feb 27th.  Please have students turn in any box tops that they have been collecting by Thursday.

Spring Program - Tuesday, March 31 for preschool through fourth grade. Please mark your calendars!

Fun Night - The parent team has landed on the evening of March 20!

Friday, Feb. 13th

Fun Friday (next week, Feb. 21) - Pajama Day!

MARKET DAY - Hopefully you have been making progress with making the products.  The next "due date" is Tuesday (February 18) when the kids have to have their advertising campaign planned out on pgs. 11-13 in their business journal (that is the first day back after winter break - we will be making our posters that day, so they need to have the plan for that ready to go in their business journal).  On February 20 (Thursday) students have to bring one sample of their product to school and be prepared to record their commercial.

Advance Notice - You have received an email (on Feb. 10) from HC regarding sign ups for spring conferences which will be held on March 23 and 25.  Please know that these will be student led conferences for 4th graders, so please plan accordingly.  Since this is a special time for your 4th grader and you, we ask that siblings not be present during the conference.  Thank you!

How to be a Living Testimony in February
This month students at Rose Park are participating in a shoe drive through an organization called Soles 4 Souls. They collect shoes then redistribute the shoes in places of greatest need such as refugee camps and places of disaster. Did you know shoes can help kids go to school, prevent disease, and provide jobs? Please watch this short video with your child and help find a pair of shoes to donate this month.

Friday, Feb. 9

Winter Break - Remember, no school on Friday the 14th and Monday the 17th.  Enjoy the long weekend!

VALENTINES DAY Celebration next week Thursday - We will celebrate together by making a small craft, exchanging valentines, and enjoying a treat at the end of the day.  A class list (pink sheet) came home on Friday - thanks for including everyone in the giving/receiving of Valentines.

NO WORD WORK - Since we have a couple of short weeks we will take a bit of a break from our word work routines.  We will spend some time practicing high frequency words for fourth and fifth grade.

MARKET DAY - At this point, all the students should have been approved for their products, and most have determined their price as well.  You are now free to spend the next couple weeks making the products.  The next "due date" is February 18 (the day we return from Winter Break) when the kids have to have their advertising campaign planned out on pgs. 11-13 in their business journal.  On February 20 students have to bring one sample of their product to school for their commercial.

MARKET DAY HELP - We're currently welcoming any willing parents/grandparents who can help with the events of this fun day.  Please sign up here - https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a49aaa828a6fa7-market

Tulip Time Choices

In 2018, Tulip Time reframed their mission statement to read "Mission Statement: To celebrate Holland’s tulips, Dutch heritage and community." To better align ourselves with their mission statement as well as with the goals here at Holland Christian, our Rose Park and Forest School first through fourth grade students will be given two options for dressing up and walking in the the 2020 Kinderparade. Our students from Rose Park and Forest School will be given the option of walking in either our new "tulip" section of the parade or our "Dutch heritage" section. The whole of our two groups walking together will be a celebration of our "community".
  • If your first through fourth grade student chooses to opt into the "tulip" section of our parade, your child will design and construct his or her own tulip to carry and then dress as a gardener based around our Living Testimony t-shirt. This gardener costume might include gardening boots and gloves, overalls, a wide-brimmed hat, etc. Anything you have handy at home that helps your child look like a busy gardener tilling the tulips will fit the part perfectly!
  • Students who opt into the "Dutch heritage" portion of our student body will wear their own dutch costume and carry the parade props our Rose Park students have carried in the past.
All of our students from Rose Park and Forest School will be walking together as one big community in the aforementioned subsets. ONLY IF your child is in first, second, third or fourth grade, please use THIS FORM to indicate your choice for your child this year. Don't hesitate to email Miska with questions or wonderings at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org
