Oct. 27, 2023

We spent some time with our kindergarten buddies on our half day.
We measured, weighed, and decorated our pumpkins.

It's the little things...Going out to recess through the emergency window.
So fun!

Bible Test (On Tuesday) - A review page will go home on Monday for our upcoming test.  Please have your child practice on Monday night.  We will also be reviewing in the classroom.  The test will take place on Tuesday.

Math - We continuing to practice 2-digit x 1-digit problems.

Reading - We have moved into our 2nd reading unit where we analyze characters in the books we are reading. We will be reading through Kate DiCamillo's book The Tiger Rising.

Science - Your kiddos are learning about plant's structures and animal's survival characteristics with Ms. Damsteegt (4th grade Spanish Immersion teacher).

Writing - Our realistic fiction stories are full of creative events!  We are coming to our final edits and will send home our final stories by the end of next week.

Friday Folders: Totally forgot to send home their folders on Friday. Look for those folders on Monday. It will contain misc. papers from their mailbox, Bible review paper, and homework for the upcoming week.

WRITING CELEBRATION - We are nearing the final stages of our realistic fiction writing that we have been working on.  We are planning to celebrate our final draft with all the Rose Park 4th graders on Friday afternoon.  Watch for that piece to come home in the days following that celebration.

MATH FACTS - Please note that we are now working on multiplication for our daily math fact practice homework.  Knowing those facts will help us be much more successful as we're learning multi-digit multiplication in class now.

MUSIC NOTE FROM MRS. BOER: We have begun learning how to play recorders! This past week we talked about how little a breath we need to play a recorder to make a pleasant sound. Parent's and dog's ears should not be hurting when we play! We also learned about playing with our left hand on top, nearest our mouth. Perhaps your child has told you about the folders they received in music class. These are to go back and forth between home and school along with your child's recorder on the day of music class. Two homework sheets were sent home to be completed by your child by the next music class.
I will send the folders home on Monday.

SWINGIN’ THE NIGHT AWAY: The Holland Christian Jazz Bands and the Old Timer’s Jazz Band are proud to present the Swingin’ the Night Away in the HCHS cafeteria on Friday, November 3, from 6:45 to 9 pm. Admission is $5, and goes to support the music program at HCHS. New to swing dancing? No worries! Dance instructors will be on hand from 6:45 pm-7:30 pm to teach us the basic steps of swing, so the evening can be enjoyed by novice and experienced dancers alike. Not in the mood for dancing? Come socialize, indulge in some delicious desserts, punch, and enjoy the music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and more.

Oct. 13

Bible - We just started our unit on Samuel, the last Judge of Israel.

Math - We are entering into a unit where we are learning to multiply two-digit numbers.  This is BIG work!  We are excited to be maturing into "big kids" math.

Reading - On Tuesday, we will celebrate our strong reading habits from our first unit and move into a unit where we analyze characters in the books we are reading.

Science - We learning about the patterns in waves relate to sound waves.

Writing - Our realistic fiction stories are full of creative events!  We still have some work to do on them yet though. We are in the midst of revising and editing! Hold tight for the final product in a few weeks.

NO HOMEWORK for next week!

Half Day on Wednesday, Oct. 18 (Dismissal at 11:30)

NO School on Thursday (10/19) and Friday (10/20)

REPORT CARDS: Report Cards can now be viewed electronically. You can locate your child's report card on PowerSchool. I have learned that the best way to view the report card is on a desktop/laptop. A phone's view will only allow you to see the number scores, but does not show you the comments.

In 4th grade, your child will receive a letter grade for math, Bible, and spelling. These grades are based on tests taken throughout the quarter. We also use a number (1, 2, 3) grading scale.

As a teacher, these are how I view each number.
1 - Needs lots of support and is an area of concern. This is a skill we will continue to work on.
2 - Not quite mastery, but is able to use the skill independently with some help/support.
3 - Mastery of the skill. They do not need help or support. They are able to do this skill independently.

Safety and Security - Holland Christian is implementing consistent security measures for all K-12 students. (Preschool will continue their drop off and pick up as previously notified). Now that school has been underway for six weeks, we are asking parent/student drop off and good-bye to take place at the front door. By October 9, we hope that all children will be able to navigate their way from the front door to their classroom. Teachers and staff will be readily available to support and cheer our independent students to their lockers and classrooms. This measure is important so that we do not have unknown or unexpected visitors accessing our buildings. This safety measure is consistent throughout all of our buildings. You’re still welcome inside as needed, please stop in at the office for a check in and name badge. Thank you for your understanding. If you have questions or concerns, please connect with Miska at mrynsburger@hollandchristian.org or Katelyn at kroskamp@hollandchristian.org
