Sept. 24

Friday afternoon was too nice! So we headed outside for work on our science posters.

Love seeing friendships form on the playground.

Our fourth grade cheerleaders were ready for the game on Friday!

Working on their messaging system for REI. How can they use light and sound to send a message of help while in the wilderness? This connects to our understanding of how phones use codes to transfer and store information.

Everyday, someone in our class has the opportunity to befriend and serve Ian. They have a list of special jobs and roles where they learn how to walk alongside of Ian at Rose Park. They are his buddy at recess, play a math game with him, and read to him in the afternoon. It is amazing to see these students learn how to walk alongside and help Ian as a friend.

WHAT ARE WE LEARNING:
Bible - Learning about Ehud, Deborah, Samson and how God called His people to be judges in the land of Israel
Math - Finishing out unit on place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction
Reading - Reviewing our strong reading habits as we take on harder books in the classroom.
Writing - We have begun our Realistic Fiction unit. The students are generating ideas of stories they wish existed that include strong emotions.
Science - We have been working towards answering the question of "How can I send a video from my phone to someone else's phone?" We have talked about Binary codes, Telegraphs, circuits, and pixels. Ms. Snoeyink has learned so much in teaching this unit ;)

Hearing these kids sing...brings joy to my heart!

HOMEWORKThis Monday, your child will come home with the regular homework load!
- 150 Reading Minutes (pink slip)
- 50 Math Fact Minutes (yellow slip)
- Mad Minute (Make sure you are marking the 2:00 minute mark and the final time it took to complete.)
- Spelling List

WALK-A-THON: On Wednesday afternoon, we will be headed to the High School for our annual HC Walk-a-thon. Students in kindergarten through 8th will be walking around the new turf between 12:30-2:00. Excited to see all the kids together for an afternoon of movement and fun!

THINK ENERGY: We have been selected to be part of a program called THINK! ENERGY on Thursday, Sept. 29.  We will learn about preserving resources related to energy production in our community and homes.  As a part of this program, our class will be awarded a $100 grant if we have 100% of our students participate with the at-home portion.  For this, your child will receive a kit on Thursday afternoon with energy saving devices that you can use in your home (it's got some pretty useful items in it - and it's free to you!).  There is a page of questions that go with it which your child will have to answer and return in order for our class to get credit.

ODC FIELD TRIP: We have two open volunteer spots! If you have time on Friday afternoon from 12:00-3:00. We would love to have you join us at the Outdoor Discovery Center. Click the Field Trip Sign Up to find out more details!

TTQ: TTQ will begin next week. We have been informed that coaches are reaching out to those who signed up.

A NOTE FROM MR. NESTER:
Dear Parents of Holland Christian Fourth Graders,
We are delighted to announce that orchestra will again be offered to our 4th grade students. 4th grade orchestra will be offered at 7:30 - 8:05 A.M. on Tuesdays and Fridays at Pine Ridge and 7:30 - 8:05 A.M. on Mondays and Thursdays at Rose Park. ONLY VIOLIN instruction will be offered to your 4th grader as the skills and knowledge learned on the violin are directly transferable to 5th grade orchestra where students may switch to viola, cello, bass or remain on violin. Having all 4th grade students learn the same instrument (violin) at this initial stage will provide
quality student and teacher modeling, simplify and increase effectiveness of instruction, and decrease class downtime.
In order for your child to participate, it will be necessary for you to furnish an instrument. Many HC families utilize and are very pleased with the Meyer Music Rental Program which allows students to upgrade to a larger high-quality instrument or switch from violin to viola, cello, or bass in subsequent school years. Meyer Music‛s rental instruments are in excellent condition and all repairs are covered in a low rental fee starting at around $10 a month. Learning to play an instrument and belonging to the school orchestra opens up a whole new world of friendship, fun, and growth. Your child will be able to take advantage of music performances and instruction throughout their enrollment at HC. After High School, students may find fulfillment in participating in college orchestras, community orchestras, string quartets, fiddling sessions, and musical groups in church. Students will learn and practice ear training, self-discipline, group cooperation, problem-solving, goal-setting, self-expression, memory skills, concentration, poise, enhanced physical coordination, high self-esteem, and the importance of teamwork—skills in great demand in almost every aspect of life. Like all the arts, music has a profound positive effect on the academic success of students. Most importantly, students will be better equipped to participate in, enjoy, and appreciate music that honors God. Developing musical skills is an avenue for your student to praise God throughout their lifetime.
If you are interested in having your child participate, please email Kyle Nester at knester@hollandchristian.org with your name, child‛s name, classroom teacher‛s name, and any questions you may have about the orchestra program. We will have an HC Orchestra Program / Meyer Music Instrument Rental Meeting on Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 in the Middle School Band Room. At this meeting families will be given an overview of the orchestra program at HC and Meyer Music’s instrument rental program. If you think you’ll want to rent an instrument through Meyer Music (highly recommended), please bring a device and Eric Phelps of Meyer Music will guide you through the online process. Your student’s instrument will be delivered to school just in time for their first orchestra practice. Attendance at this meeting is not mandatory and if desired you can rent an instrument through Meyer Music at https://www.meyer-music.com or you can head to their Holland location and rent an instrument in person.
Our first 4th grade orchestra class is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 3rd at Rose Park and Tuesday, October 4th at Pine Ridge. At Holland Christian, we are committed to developing the whole student: mind, heart, body, and soul. Innovative, high-quality music instruction and experiences at Holland Christian is but one aspect of our effort to nurture our multifaceted students. We hope that you will take advantage of this chance for your child to discover and develop their musical gifts.

Blessings,
Dinah Pereira – Pine Ridge Principal and Elementary Spanish Immersion Coordinator
Miska Rynsburger – Rose Park and Forest School Principal
Kyle Nester – Elementary and Middle School Orchestra Teacher

Sept. 16, 2022

"Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers...." This song has been stuck in my head all week. What a joy to hear the students break out into song and the song is saying the Books of the Bible. Also, I learned how motivating a DeBoers donut can be!

What are we learning?
Bible - We just finished a unit on "Why We Should Study the Bible?"
Math - Reviewing place value, rounding, addition, and subtraction
Reading - Reviewing our strong reading habits as we take on harder books in the classroom.
Writing - We have begun our Realistic Fiction unit. We have listened and study some mentor texts and looked for key elements that should be included in our realistic stories.
Science - We have been working towards answering the question of "How can I send a video from my phone to someone else's phone?" We have talked about Binary codes, Telegraphs, circuits, and pixels. Ms. Snoeyink has learned so much in teaching this unit ;)

THINK! ENERGY: We have been selected to be part of a program called THINK! ENERGY on Tuesday, Sept. 29.  We will learn about preserving resources related to energy production in our community and homes.  As a part of this program, our class will be awarded a $100 grant if we have 100% of our students participate with the at-home portion.  For this, your child will receive a kit with energy saving devices that you can use in your home (it's got some pretty useful items in it - and it's free to you!).  There is a page of questions that go with it which your child will have to answer and return in order for our class to get credit.  On Monday, I will send home a yellow consent form for you to peruse that allows your child to participate in this program.  You do have the option to opt out, but I really think you'll want your child to experience this.  Sign and return the form only if you do NOT want your child to participate.  If I do not receive a form from you, I will administer a kit to your child and I will look for the questionnaire to be returned from them at a later date.  Thank you!

MUSIC NOTE FROM MRS. BOER: Let me introduce myself. My name is Rochelle Boer and I am your child's music teacher this year. I'm not new to teaching music. Before this year, I had been teaching music at the Pine Ridge and South Side buildings for 15 years.
Part of the music curriculum for fourth grade is learning how to play the recorder and read music. We would like to begin playing recorder the second week of October. If your child has a soprano recorder at home, they are welcome to use it. If you need to purchase one, your child may purchase one from me for $5. Some families may want to think about having two recorders, one at school to play and one at home to practice. The music classroom has recorders to borrow that are disinfected in case a student forgets their recorder on the day of music class but some don't feel comfortable with that. More information will follow later about recorder homework/practice expectations. I am excited about adding to our abilities to be Beauty Creators (one of our Discipleship Practices)!

Sept. 1

Loving music with Mrs. Boer

We imagined what it was like to sit around the fire and hear stories passed down
from the elder. We learning how God's story came to be.

Another fantastic week as passed. Started with a loss of electricity and ended with an afternoon playing with our kindergarten buddies. Thankful for this bunch of kiddos. After two weeks of assessing and setting expectations, I am excited to move onto the teaching of 4th grade content and learning. I think the students are too!

On Thursday afternoon, we spent the afternoon playing
and creating with our kindergarten buddies.

Convocation was bright and sunny ;)

In science, we are asking questions and drawing models
about how information travels from phone to phone.

A Note from Mrs. Rynsburger: Watching our children play hard and re enter school after recess with big smiles and cheeks full of fresh air makes our hearts sing! But could I lift something to you early in the year and hope to suggest a solution? We've noted a change in this healthy play for some kids at the launch of this school year and this change is brought on by Pokemon cards. We LOVE the creativity, the storyline, the potential math each card offers. But, what's not included on a warning label of pokemon packages is the trades that are regretted and bring about tears, the damage that can happen to a pristine collectable, the lost cards, the 'who stole my card?', the inactive play at recess.

We're proposing a solution! Check this out! Our kind parent team has created an active outdoor play kit for every classroom!

Screen Shot 2022-09-01 at 4.05.35 PM.png

These will be brand new and ready to rock on Tuesday! How about we save all trading card fun for home and playdates and we'll keep our children actively playing with playground balls AND? we'll have the ranch ready for our ranch hands chores soon! Thank you for keeping all trading cards at home.

Thank you for understanding and partnership! We LOVE our busy kids,
Miska
